One of my absolute favorite pictures ever!
~*The Luckiest*~ by Ben Folds
I don't get many things right the first time. In fact, I am told that a lot. Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls Brought me here.
And where was I before the day That I first saw your lovely face? Now I see it everyday And I know...
That I am, I am, I am... The luckiest .
I love you more than I have ever found a way to say to you.*
{["I love that you get cold when it is 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle in your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."]}

| Well....the day began pretty normally. Got up around 10ish, put on my swimsuit and was going to sit by the pool. As I grabbed my Ramen to go heat up, there was a knock at my door. It was Danielle coming to ask me if I wanted to go to the beach. With a resounding "yes", I walked out the door.
Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean is quite fun. I was going to be taught how to "body surf". Yay! But instead I was mauled by sea urchins! I kid you not...it was horrible. I was under-taken by a huge wave and thrown across some rocks. As I tried to swim my way out, I felt like I cut my hand open on something. I stood out the water, raised my hand to eye level, and viewed in shock. I had no clue what happened to me. Danielle screams "you were stung by a sea urchin". And from there, it was all down hill.
Not to mention....
On the way to the beach, we saw a dead body laying on the side of the road. He was killed/murdered the day before and left there to rot (or so we thought). People had gone by to view the body, some even took pictures.
The real story about the dead body was that he was a man who tried to steal a car. Right there, the people of Liberia took the matter into their own hands and pursued vigilante justice. They pierced holes into his wrists, slit his neck, and bound and tied his hands and feet together. The worst part about this was that the murder was committed right infront of UN guards/Liberian Police. Apparently, they wanted to leave a message to everyone. That is why they left him there for an entire day, uncovered.
Things are definitely a lot different than anywhere I've ever been before. Be thankful of your current situation no matter how bad or good you may think it is. It's definitely been an eye opener.

Hello Everyone!
Well it is another bright, sunny, hot, and muggy day here in Monrovia. I just spent the last hour trying to download America's Army onto my computer. However, the internet SUCKS here, so I can't. I'm really bummed.
This next week for the ship is "holiday". The ship will be shut down as far as surgeries and such go. Crew services also gets some days off! Yay! But whatever will I do with my free time? God only knows. Maybe I'll tan in the sun all day long? Don't get me wrong, I miss the snow a lot...however there is just something about being tan in the middle of December that is so exciting!
Tonight the ship has a "Christmas Ball". You are required to dress up if you are going. They will only be playing "ballroom" music. Eh...I'm going to just keep myself busy. I have no clue how to dance ballroom-style. I guess I'll learn quickly.
Tomorrow, we are having a Christmas dinner (atleast I think it is tomorrow). Hopefully, we'll have something exciting and fulfilling to eat. All I keep thinking about at this point is how I will be missing perogies, coleslaw, sausage, mashed potatoes, etc. =( I'm sad.
Needless to say, it doesn't really feel like Christmas for me. I guess the older you get, the less it feels like any holidays. That's kinda scary! =|
All too soon, I'll be home and back at school. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being here, but I just feel it seemed to be at the wrong time of the year. There are so many arguments for and against this...this converstation could go on forever. BUT...Carpe Diem, right??
I wish you all the very best holiday season anyone could ever have. Please know that I am thinking about you all and that I miss you very much. Don't forget, when I come back, I'll be the big 2-1. And guess what!? You're all gonna take me out for a drink! =) hahahaa.....I was only kidding....well maybe?
Please forward this letter onto everyone else. I really don't have EVERYONE'S email, so I would be ever so appreciative if you would do that for me.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Feliz Navidad, Merry Kwanza...=)
Much love,
Shannon. | | |
| I had the most distrubing dream last night. It was absolutely horrible. And thus, I will tell you about it.
I can't remember how I got to this place that was a video store, but it had a man with scrubs on and he knew where my luggage was at. There was a window behind him that I could see onto a street that I not too far from my real home. In the middle of the street was a Burger King drive thru menu sign but the actual restuarant was in this plaza where the video store was at.
Through the window I saw a girl driving a silver Honda Civic. She turned into a driveway off of the main road and hit the side of the house that she was turning into. Her car just kinda bounced off with minor damage. Then as she was pulling into the driveway, she rear-ended the parked car at the end of the driveway infront of the garage door. Someone jumped out of the car, the driver yelled "goodbye" and then proceeded to speed down the driveway in reverse and out into the busy road without even checking for traffic.
She backed into the median where the Burger King drive thru menu sign no longer was, and it was filled with tiny rocks and pebbles. Her car was transformed into a go-kart with off-roading wheels. She was almost hit by a couple of cars, and then she kept trying to speed away out of the median, but her tires did not have any traction. They just kept spinning round and round.
She was able to move her go-kart some but ended up fish-tailing into traffic. She was then hit by a semi-truck (right infront of my eyes). The truck drove straight through her go-kart and her body. Her body shattered everywhere, splattered, torn....blood and flesh were thrown all over the place, even into the video store where my mom and I were standing. It was so graphic and gory.
I still have her face imbedded into my memory. She looked directly at me before it all happened. I had a sense that she knew of what was to come. She looked horrified. Those HUGE brown eyes pierced my very being.
Medication is never a good thing when it causes side-effects like the ones I have been having. They said that I would have very vivid and terrifying dreams but I never thought that they would be this graphic. I have been getting horrible headaches. I feel like there's all this built up pressure within my skull. There's been a very loud ringing in my ears that makes it very hard for me to go to sleep with. Throughout several days I have a range of nausea which varies from minor to very intense.
And to think these are only pills to help in the prevention of obtaining malaria. Yuck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Onto other news, my luggage still has not arrived. We went to the airport yesterday to see if it was there. American Airlines told my Aunt that it did arrive in Monrovia on Sunday's flight. The airport did not have it. They even brought me into a room where they keep lost luggage and asked me if I had seen it. It was not there.
They tried to tell me that maybe American Airlines just "assumed" it was here already. I found that very hard to believe since they have to scan each tag before it gets onto the plane.
Then they tried to tell me that it was at the Monrovia SN Brussel's Office and that the contact number I put down for the ship (a number which was given to me by the Purser) was a wrong number. I asked David (the Purser) and he confirmed that was the correct local number for the ship. SO....some Liberian has some nice stuff for Christmas this year...(I don't really know for sure, I'm just assuming).
We (David and I) will be leaving after lunch to travel to the downtown Monrovia SN Brussel's office to see what they have to say about it. Hopefully I will be compensated if it is not around.
I'll keep you all posted as things unravel. Take care.
| Letter sent December 11, 2005:
Well, I was in sort of a predictament tonight.
Earlier today (Sunday) I went to the beach with some fellow crew members. The beach was great, warm water, nice hot sand (not exactly white sand beaches but better than Lake Michigan). We had a bonfire and sang songs and such. It was really a good time.
However, on the way back we ran into a bit of a problem. UN (United Nations) is stationed predominantly throughout the area. While we were driving back, they had a segment of the road blocked off that we had to go through. So naturally, we had to take a detour. Our drivers had no idea on where they were going...we were just following the other cars throughout the route. The streets were dark, barely any light except from the headlights of the vehicles. There were people ALL around! We were kinda joking around at first but then things turned serious.
The road that we were heading down slowly came to a halt. Cars began turning around and going back in the opposite direction. We didn't know what to do. We saw a UN vehicle and he said it was okay to go in the direction where everyone was turning from. However, the natives told us to turn around and go back. We didn't know what to do. During this ride, we received a call from our ship. They informed us that the "peaceful protest" that was going on went terribly wrong. They were throwing rocks at vehicles, shooting at vehicles, and pulling people out of them and shooting them right there on the street.
So...I freaked out. I didn't really show it. I kept cracking jokes and laughing but I was scared outa my whits.
We were informed to go to the nearest UN base. That we did. We sat there for so long. Eventually we met up another team from Mercy Ships. They were going to pick up new people from the airport. Their vehicle was blocked off and stoned. It was interesting to hear their story.
While at the base, we didn't really know what to expect. Everyone was exhausted and hungry. All we had to eat at the beach was some chocolate bananas. We received a call that the Irish UN were going to military escort us back to the boat. Needless to say, they were called/needed elsewhere so we had to escort. It wasn't until about 1 am that we decided to do our own convoy and take the back roads to the ship.
Obviously we made it back safely.
While at the UN base, my camera was used to take some photos. Only someone with a press tag could take pictures. Normally, pictures of UN workers/buildings/etc are prohibited. He was able to take some and I have them stored on my camera!
Once I got to ship, I took a shower. I really don't feel good at all. My stomach is all icky feeling and cramping. I'm really pale too, especially considering that I was at the beach all day in the African sun. If I develop a fever, I will be going to the ship doc asap.
I don't know if my luggage has arrived yet. I've run out of underware and clean clothes to wear as well. I keep using someone else's shampoo (don't know who's it is, it's just in the bathroom). I hope they don't mind. =)
I hope all is going well for everyone else. Keep me posted as things unfold. I'll be sure to keep you all informed.
Love,
Shan.
